Write an argued paragraph – Maxicours
When you ask to write a well-argued paragraph, you have to think about it and take a stand on a specific theme. We must then clearly state our opinion by explaining and illustrating it. It is an argument that defends a thesis (opinion, idea).
Warning !
We must also often take into account other theses than his own and reflect on the arguments that support this position even if it is not his.
1. Make an argument
An introductory sentence clearly expresses the supported opinion. It can be introduced by an expression affirming the opinion, for example: “in my opinion, in my opinion, it seems obvious to me that…”.
Example 1:
In our image society, the media occupy too much of a place. → Depreciating opinion of the importance of the media.
Example 2:
The modern world frees women from all the obligations that made them slave to a macho society. → Improving opinion of the liberation of women.
It is important to clearly define the theme on which you are asked to reflect in order to avoid off-topic: the reflection relates to a similar theme but does not really respond to the subject.
Example:
Subject : “Are you for or against advertising on television? «
Theme:
– Advertising on TV, for or against? A paragraph that answers this question is fair.
– Television, for or against? Advertising in the city, for or against? A paragraph that answers these questions is
off topic, outside the subject’s theme.
2. Explain an argument
Several sentences develop the stated argument. It is possible to use connectors which highlight this link between argument and explanation → « indeed, in fact, thus … »
Example:
Argument: Country life is a source of calm, serenity.
Explanation: Indeed, nature offers a restful silence, a resourceful purity. Being isolated in nature allows a meditation that soothes the soul and the agitation of the day.
3. Illustrate an argument, an explanation
A sentence can expand the explanation and make it convincing by an example. The example can be taken from personal experience. The example can be introduced by a linking tool word like “for example, thus…”.
Example:
So my father, who has a very busy and nervously tiring job, enjoys country life. When he finds himself behind the wheel of our car and crosses the fields of heather in bloom, he breathes and calms down, happy to find the tranquility of our peaceful hamlet.
→ The explanation is usually followed by a concluding sentence who reaffirms the thesis
sustained in the first sentence.
Example:
It is undeniable that living in the countryside brings a certain peace, after the tumult of the day.
4. Tips
• The paragraph begins with a paragraph : a shift of a few squares of the margin, which highlights the beginning of an argued paragraph.
• The three-part paragraph is easier to read if you uses link words which introduce the explanation then the example.
