At this point, it’s no secret that 2020 has been one shit show of a year, beginning with the tragic death of Kobe Bryant, as well as his daughter and seven others. Now, not even four months in, a contagious virus has come through and literally shut the entire world down. We can’t go to work. We can’t go to school. We can’t go shopping, unless it’s for groceries. We can’t go to barbershops or salons. We can’t hang out with our friends.

You know what else we can’t do? We can’t date. Not the way we want to, anyway.

The Coronavirus aka COVID-19 aka “The Rona” has swooped in and brought the love lives of millions to a screeching halt. Imagine shooting your shot at that person you’ve been eyeing forever, and you finally get them, but can’t do anything about it for the foreseeable future. Can’t go on a date, because everything is closed, and while there are some who don’t mind inviting people into their homes that they hardly know, most people are not going for that.

“So what are we supposed to do?”

The reality of it is that if you truly insist on dating during these crazy times, you’ll have to accept being reduced to virtual interactions and essentially, even if you’re only a couple of miles away, being in what will feel like a long distance situation, until further notice. That just means it’s time to step it up and get creative. More texting, more phone conversations. Throw some FaceTime in there. Hell, go on virtual dates. It’s nothing for both of you to log into your favorite streaming service and watch that movie or show you’ve been hearing so much about. Add some food, a glass of wine and you’re golden. For the music lovers, hit up a virtual concert or simply throw on a playlist and vibe out.

“What about sex though? Is that dead, too?”

Pretty much. Along with dating, sex should be put on hold, as well. Sure, you might think you’re clean and you’re taking all the right precautions, but are you 100% certain your partner is doing the same? You don’t know who they’ve been around and what they’ve been exposed to, so swapping spit and getting sweaty might not be the best idea, right now.

At the end of the day, we are all adults and adults are going to do what they want, but if this Coronavirus thing is as real as they say it is, it’s probably best to play it safe. Don’t endanger others and most importantly, don’t endanger yourself. To be real, this little freeze might be exactly what some of us need. Too often, shit moves too fast and we do too much, too soon, not realizing we didn’t take the time to get to know somebody as well as we should’ve. Well now, time is all we have.
