The outlook for the biosphere is equally bleak when there is insufficient heating from the decay of radioactive elements. In this case, volcanism is quieted, but so is the planet’s dynamo. There is simply not enough heat to sustain convection and without it, there is no magnetic field. Mars may have suffered this fate early in its history which explains its relatively thin atmosphere and weak magnetic field today.

Heat is drawn out of the planet’s interior to the surface where we see it in the form of volcanoes. It also drives plate tectonics, the massive rock recycling system that takes cold, solid rock from the surface and melts it at depth. It’s the process by which continents move and mountain ranges are built. Poetic, sure, but convection within Earth’s interior also serves a vital function to the preservation of life on the surface: dynamism. Earth’s liquid outer core is mainly composed of iron. As the liquid iron moves, it generates the planet’s magnetic field. This magnetic field protects Earth’s atmosphere from degradation by the Sun’s solar winds. Without it, Earth would lose its atmosphere and life on this planet would disappear with it.

Tidal friction can generate enough heat to maintain liquid water even without an atmosphere. Another of Jupiter’s moons, Europa, may have a liquid water ocean underneath its icy exterior, yet it’s nowhere near the Goldilocks zone. However, the thick layer of ice surrounding the moon could protect alien life living within its watery depths.
In March of this year I found myself staring out over a sea of clouds from the top of Mount Taranaki on the north island of New Zealand. While there are a tantalizing number of possibilities for how life could exist on other planets, we’re perhaps most interested in life that would somehow resemble what we know on Earth. It’s easier for us to imagine ourselves stepping foot on an alien world with a breathable atmosphere than exploring the inky black depths of Europa’s hidden ocean, even though the latter is far more likely. Now we have a new set of criteria to narrow the search.

In order to understand how radioactive decay affects Earth’s heating and internal convection, researchers modeled three different scenarios: excessive heating from radioactivity, minimal heating, and the base case of Earth as it is. Using the base case, the model accurately predicted active plate tectonics and an internal dynamo capable of generating a magnetic field.

Here’s where things get interesting. When the researchers increased the amount of heating from radioactive decay, volcanism increased, but the amount of internal convection generated was insufficient to create a magnetic field. There was too much heat at the planet’s surface to allow the internally generated heat to dissipate. Heat alone is not enough to create a dynamo. There has to be a large enough temperature gradient between the hot core and cool rocks near the surface for convection to take place. Life on this planet doesn’t have a great track record of surviving periods of intense volcanism as proposed by this model, but losing our atmosphere to the solar winds certainly wouldn’t help.

Our planet exists in the so-called Goldilocks zone where water is liquid at the planet’s surface because it’s not too hot and not too cold. What this research shows, is that that alone is not enough. For life to exist as we know it, there has to be just the right amount of heating from the decay of radioactive elements to sustain a dynamo, too. The dynamo is critical to preserving the planet’s atmosphere and the life that depends on it.

It’s possible, though, that life could exist on other planets in completely novel ways. Another source of planetary heat is tidal heating, which occurs when orbital and rotational energy (from a moon orbiting around its planet, for example) are dissipated as heat. Jupiter’s moon, Io, is the most geologically active body in our solar system despite being about the same size as our moon. If it weren’t for its proximity to Jupiter and its other moons, it would be frozen solid. Instead, Io could remain geologically active for billions of years.
