Dating : The Northern Lights

They made it seem like it was the darkness that called them. The night consumed all joy from our once happy town, cloaking the village like a heavy blanket reminding us all of their claim.

First, some thought that people left in the night. After all, it was just Joey, the town drunk. No one was suspicious when he had suddenly disappeared. It wasn’t until six more disappeared with surviving loved ones spouting the same story of cloaked begins that the town began to worry.

Perhaps it was our isolation that caused them to choose us or maybe it was because we were so far north that the sun barely touched the sky. Whatever the reason, they had come.

I saw them first when they took papa. The only light were the glowing orbs deep within their shadowed faces. Their tattered black clothing moved around them as if suspended in fluid before it reached out to touch papa and he disappeared, agony etched on his face. Next they came for sis, she was only three. Then mama. Always at night, always in the dark.

It made sense to be afraid of the dark but it’s the light that was truly terrifying.

Sis wouldn’t stop talking about the lights before they came for her. Pointing at the bright greens and blues that she claimed lit up the sky. I heard papa and mama mention them too. I couldn’t see them then but I could see them now. Seeing the beautiful colors, I knew what they meant. A beacon streaking across the sky, announcing their arrival

I huddled behind the old shed, knowing they were coming for me too.
