You have three kinds of users.

– looking for long term relationships and marriage

– using as a hook up / casual sex site

– using to push market porn and/or prostitution

There can be a little overlap in these groups but really these are 3 VERY different things.

Other sites seem to do a better job deciding what they are. There are serious relationship sites that have systems that marginalize and reject hook up people and scammers fairly easily. Other sites have a reputation as hook up sites and did a good job of curtailing the expectations of those seeking long term partners. Then there are sites that are just traffic pushing for porn and/or cam girls and unless you are highly gullible they are fairly obvious.

Dating sites tend to pivot solidly into one of these three directions fairly quickly. It seems like POF is having a tough time permanently settling into one of these roles.

Obviously from the name, its original intent was as a relationship site with a casual style. The problem with the name is: it loosely infers desperation which: brings on the hookup people seeking easy prey, and, that leads to scammers creating false targets for the hook up people.

Its STILL a place for relationship people, just with the added task of avoiding scams and overt sex demands.

Usually, if a relationship site gets bloated with hook ups or porn push marketing, the site just turns into the skid and pivots to accommodate the burgeoning user demand or vice versa. POF’s issue with doing this is the name. « Plenty of fish in the sea » is some platitude a yenta aunt will tell you after hearing about your break up with the goal of getting you into « settling down with a nice girl » ; its not a name that could ever be interpreted to mean « GET CRAZY WET PUSSY SEX WITH ONE CLICK! », so, we are left with a site that endures in this state of brand limbo.

  1. All I found were bots on POF. If they had a name plus an underscore with numbers, all of them who sent  » hey there 🙂 « , were way too obvious.
