Android – Activate emojis on Android

Depending on the devices used, emojis can vary dramatically, this is particularly the case on Android, which has seen several generations of emojis.

Check the display on your browser

First of all, you need to check that your smartphone or tablet is capable of displaying emoji. For example, you can log in to Wikipedia’s emoji page as shown in the screenshots below:

If the emoji are not displayed in your browser, you will have to root your device (it’s a bit more technical), or simply use messaging applications that contain built-in emojis by default, for example Whatsapp or Hangout which is installed by default on Android when the device starts up.

Check your version of Android

To do this, go to your settings> about the device (see screenshot below).

For versions 4.1 or higher

If you have Android version 4.1 or higher, emoji are built-in by default. You will simply have to enable emoji keyboards by checking it by going to Settings> Language & input.

Some of the latest versions of Android already have a built-in emoji keyboard, so there is no need to activate it (the keyboard name does not appear in the « Language & input » menu). You can access your emojis directly from your « Messages » application, when you write a message:

On the left, a smiley face is displayed, you click on it, and the emoji keyboard is displayed as follows:

For versions prior to 4.1

If you want to use emoji, you need to install apps that have emoji already built-in, since your version of Android does not support them.

For example, you can use the WhatsApp app, or you can use Hangout, both of which are free apps.

Convert combinations or keywords to emoji

Install the google keyboard

If your device does not have it, download the « Google keyboard » from « Google play ».

Then install it by going to the Settings menu

Once activated, if it was not already installed on your device, this keyboard will allow you to enter the combinations or keywords that you want to assign to your emoji.

Add emoji dictionary

Still in the Settings menu
Click on the emoji dictionary that corresponds to the French language, and install it.

NB: Do not forget to restart your device to be sure that all your installations and manipulations have been taken into account.
