I walked into the grocery store, I only needed a few items, so I walked quickly between the can lined aisles and gathered the few supplies I needed, and headed for the checkout lane. The girl at the cash register was in her late teens or early twenties and she had lip and nose piercings and plenty of visible tat’s. I put my items on the counter.

“Do you have a phone number for our rewards program?”

“Sure, 630–555–1212.”

“Thank you.” She quickly rang up my items, “$18.91.”

“A good year,” I said, pulling my debit card out, “I remember it well.” She chuckled a little bit at the idea, “of course, if I said 1947, you’d be more likely to believe it because I look like an old fart to you.” She didn’t say anything, “1891 is the more true,” I said, gathering my purchased items and left her with that idea to ponder.
