Chapter 14

“Luke, can you believe that bitch took my dad’s journals,” Maddy asked?

“Realistically, yes,” Luke said as he stuffed his mouth with ice cream. “I just want to know exactly why she took it.”

“I mean, obviously her family told her who and what I am, and now they’re planning to capture me and keep me in some creepy dungeon under their house,” Maddy said with anxiousness.

Maddy took a deep breath. The scent of fresh vanilla and strawberries began to calm her nerves. It had been a few days since she’d found out that Leslie had stolen her dad’s journals, and her grandparents still hadn’t come up with a solution to get them back. She had yet to make a move, which made Maddy feel nervous. She didn’t want to be ambushed. She liked being prepared.

“Look Madd, it’s winter break,” Luke said. “I know you’re anxious right now, but let’s try to enjoy our first holiday season together. You’ve been cooped inside of your room for a week now. I thought that maybe if we did a little Christmas shopping together, it would take your mind off of things.”

“Take my mind off things? Lucas, how can I enjoy the holidays with all of this going on right now,” asked Maddy? “My life is literally at danger, and no amount of ice cream or holiday traditions is going to change that.”

Maddy jumped out of her seat and snatched her coat from the table.

“Madd, I was just — ”

Luke couldn’t finish any of his sentences before Maddy had disappeared.

She didn’t know where she was heading, but she needed to get away for a minute. She also couldn’t leave the mall because Luke was her ride there. She had never been so paranoid in her life. Every bump or odd noise she heard made her feel threatened.

“Look at me, now I’m off by myself,” Maddy said to herself. “I’m running from the run person who understands what I’m going through.”

Maddy was walking on the second floor of the mall when her phone suddenly rang.

It was Dillon.

“I see you girl,” Dillon said.

Maddy turned around looking for Dillon, but she couldn’t find her.

“I’m over here in the jewelry store,” Dillon said.

Maddy turned once more and saw Dillon jumping and waving her hands in the air.

“I’m on the way,” Maddy said.

When she made it over to Dillon, she gave her a hug.

“Hey girl, what’re you getting out of here,” Maddy asked?

“Chile, my mama wanted new charms for her bracelet, so my brother and I are getting her two apiece.”

“That’s sweet,” said Maddy.”

“I guess. You know how she is about gifts. She likes to tell us what to get her. She doesn’t like surprises,” Dillon said as she handed the cashier her credit card. “What are you getting your folks?”

“Oh, ya know, Nana has been hinting at this new china set, and Grandpa just wants something Dallas Cowboy affiliated,” Maddy said as she shook bot of the bags that she was carrying in the air.”

“Oh, shit,” Dillon said.

“What,” asked Maddy?

“Don’t look back, but Leslie is headed right this way.”

Maddy turned around and saw that Leslie was walking toward her and Dillon with her band of bitches following right behind her.

“Well, I guess they finally let you out of your cage, huh Maddy,” Leslie said laughing maniacally.

“Bath and Body Works called bitch. They want their sweet pea body spray back,” Dillon said.

“Bitch you wish I was wearing sweet pea body spray,” Leslie said rolling her eyes and putting her hand in Dillon’s face. “Look, I’m not here for you. I’m here for your girl Maddy.”

“Leslie, girl what do you want? Luke doesn’t want anything to do with you, and I couldn’t care less about anything you have to say right now,” Maddy said.

She was terrified, but she couldn’t let Leslie see her in that way.

“I know your secret,” Leslie said, “and once the time is right? Well, you know what’s gonna happen.”

Maddy ran out of the store and rushed to find Luke. Dillon pushed passed Leslie and ran after Maddy.

“Madd, wait up,” Dillon yelled!

Once she had caught up with Maddy, Dillon grabbed her arm.

“Maddy, what was she talking about back there? What secret,” asked Dillon?

“It’s complicated Dill, you wouldn’t understand,” Maddy said.

Luke walked over and asked what was going on.

“Leslie ambushed us mid-conversation and now Maddy’s all flustered,” Dillon said.

“Meet me in my back yard tonight at 8,” Maddy said to Dillon.

“Okay,” Dillon said with confusion.

“Maddy, what are you about to do,” asked Luke?

“If I’m going to get through this, I’m going to need the love and support of all the people that I love.”

Maddy grabbed Dillon’s hand and then gave her a hug. Luke looked off to the side, and he and Maddy walked away. Dillon stood in silence because she had no clue what she was about to be getting into.

The car ride back to Maddy’s house was silent. When they pulled up, Dillon was already sitting outside waiting for them to pull up.

“I thought I told her 8,” Maddy asked Luke?

“It is 8. You were in such a moment that you didn’t even check the time to see what was really happening,” Luke said.

Maddy facepalmed herself and got out of the car.

“Girl, what is really going on,” asked Dillon?

“I’m about to show you right now,” said Maddy.

The three of them walked into Maddy’s backyard.

“Stand over there. I’ve been practicing, but I’m not really sure how much control I have over it,” Maddy told Dillon.

Dillon took a few steps back, and so did Luke.

Maddy closed her eyes and began mumbling Nimmish to herself.

“Luke, what the hell is going on? What the hell is she saying,” asked Dillon?

“You’re about to see,” Luke said.

Maddy began to rise from the ground.

“WHAT THE FU — ” exclaimed Dillon! “Is this bitch levitating?!”

Luke was laughing.

“This is what you wanted to know,” Luke said.

Dillon stood in shock. She was so confused.

Maddy came back down to the ground and began mumbling to herself again. When she was finished, she opened her eyes to find Dillon’s mouth on the ground.

Maddy began to laugh and walked over to Dillon.

“Bitch, what the hell was that,” Dillon asked?

“This is what I’ve been keeping from you these past few months,” Maddy said.

“What, bitch? The fact that you can fucking fly,” she asked?

Maddy and Luke both laughed.

“There’s a lot that I have to catch you up on, girl. Welcome to my new life,” Maddy said with an awkward smile.

“This bitch is an Avenger and she wasn’t gone tell me?”

Maddy began to explain to Dillon her family’s history, and Dillon took it pretty well.

“That is some cool ass shit girl. Why did you think you couldn’t tell me? I can keep a secret,” said Dillon.

Maddy and Luke looked at each other and smiled.
