Axiom’s Faulty Filter Falters

On this undisclosed StarFleet space dock, three starships receive restorative repairs for damage inflicted from battle with a Tlingon armada.

Overseeing operations is Vulcan Commander Varis, who stands while speaking to two of her personnel, also standing at attention in her office.

“A rule being a rule is an illogical and invalid reason for doing anything,” she says to them.

Varis believes that Rules should not be obeyed, but complied with… and only if it is reasonable to do so. They should be treated as conditional and contextual, not arbitrary nor absolute.

Rules ought not be used to bound and bind, but to guide or instruct or recommend. They should not constrain what is possible by contriving things as IMpossible or ‘not allowed’, but facilitate potentials. There are always, and must be, exceptions.

Wiser to keep options open — fluid and flexible, to flow and shift, transition and transform accordingly, as needed per circumstances. Life is dynamic, not static; and so should we be.

We are not real, just quantum projections and energetic reflections; therefor, rules cannot be held insoluble or unreconcilable.

She does not say that to them, since she does not want to encourage routine disregard for rules and regulations.

“However,” Varis continued, explaining to Tellarite Yeoman Chaig and Human Crewman Bernstein, “if you do not follow the rules, then regulations — — and expectation — is that you be penalized. Reprimanded.”

During the Commander’s pause, here, Chaig and Bernstein look chagrin, dismayed, then had their worry allayed as Varis resumed.

“So… I will document this indiscretion in your record… not as infraction, but as a notation of initiative and ingenuity. You say, Yeoman Chaig, that Crewman Berstein was merely doing as you ordered, and I accept this confession. Despite the fact that you only outrank him in the sense that he technically has no rank. And considering that no harm was done, I see no beneficial purpose to punishing either of you. Return to your duties.”

As the door closed behind them after their exit, admonishment over, Chaig chuffled (Tellarite chuckle) to her friend’s shocked expression; both relieved they ‘got away with it’.
