Patriarchy killed our orgasms
“Something about the women, or something about the sex”
It will not come as a surprise if a few people zoom off to google what orgasm is before reading on….or maybe not, most of you have heard of the word quite often and need no further explanations.
However, for the sake of clarity, let us define orgasm.
An orgasm is a feeling of intense sexual pleasure that happens during sexual activity. It’s sometimes called “coming” or “climaxing”. Both men and women have orgasms. — NHS website
Even though orgasms are meant to be experienced by both men and women, few women can boast of experiencing it; men, on the other hand, reach orgasm more often. Medical conditions, may sometimes be a hindrance to women experiencing sexual pleasure to the max; but what about the healthy ones?
I stumbled on an interesting article by Michael Castleman on Psychology today, where he tries to elaborate on the reasons why few women experience orgasms. His opening statement went thus;
“Why? Two possibilities. Something about the women, or something about the sex”
Well, he was right, if women are not experiencing maximum sexual pleasure, they are to blame… or maybe the sex is. He elaborated on a few factors that may affect a woman’s ability to orgasm.
After reading through Castleman’s and other related researches on this topic, I realized most factors attributed to a woman’s inability to properly enjoy sex is greatly influenced by patriarchal systems.
I will try to use each of his examples to show how patriarchy is to blame for fewer orgasms, but before that, let us have an idea of what patriarchy is from the image below.
Without further ado, let’s dive into Michael Castleman’s factors and what role patriarchy has to play;
