It was supposed to be a safe place for orphans, or at least that what they claimed when they dragged us here. They had a safe place all picked out for us, away from the fighting. Somewhere we could be kids again, as though anyone who had survived this long could ever go back to just being a kid. We were grateful, and that graciousness overtook any caution we had left. Our minds and bodies were too weary from just surviving to remind us to watch for traps.
What they didn’t tell us is the effect it would have on our bodies, our magic. That the very stones of the building would drain us of our abilities and keep us prisoners. They didn’t tell us that they were wanting us to train up and sell off to the highest bidder, a replacement for the children lost in the war. After all, we were children without a family. We should be grateful for all of this. They told us it was safe, but they never told us our haven was really a new hell.
