I have always had an on and off again relationship with Asthma.
As a child, my mother smoked three packs a day even after our family doctor looked her in the face and said that I (her daughter) was allergic to it. Her addiction trumped a mother’s love. My child self felt it was me rather than her smoking that was the problem.
Was she being selfish for refusing to give up smoking for the health of her daughter?
Or was I being selfish for having a medical condition?
As a child, I had no choice but to live at home and continue to be exposed to a trigger that was making me constantly sick. As an adult, I took back my agency by checking off “non-smoker” whenever I could. Now, I learned writing “Not 420 friendly” is a necessity.
Allergies to marijuana is a real thing. To all the pot smokers out there, have some consideration.
In the meantime, here are some tips on how to date and socialize with asthma (especially if you are allergic to marijuana):
- Specify you are not 420 friendly on all social media profiles. (In a perfect world, this should be enough. You may want to explain why you are not 420 friendly so they under the consequences of not respecting your boundaries).
- Check off nonsmoker whenever you can on dating sites.
- Find out if certain restaurants or bars allow smoking. Nowadays, most restaurants do not allow smoking. However, many bars do in some cities. When I went to an Irish bar in downtown Orlando, I felt sick for the rest of the weekend from exposure to second-hand smoke.
I still struggle at times as many people who smoke tobacco or marijuana are ignorant of how it affects people like myself.
