How to keep your new “long distance” relationship alive

These times have been a mess to say the least, but even messier for our love lives. Being 22 years old, my boyfriend is my world like a lot of people in their 20’s. Scrolling through social media realizing a lot of couples have broken up puzzled me. I didn’t want to be apart of that movement so I had to get creative.

Yes, we’ve all heard it “distance makes the heart grow fonder”. You’re still in a relationship though, physically you can’t be together but what about virtually? FaceTime and Whatapp video calls are the new norm for me and my significant other. We’ve also dabbled with Houseparty for the trivia games and Zoom screen share to watch Netflix and Hulu together.

What else can you do? Social distancing, while a bit of a tease makes a world of a distance. Being able to see someone’s face in person is something we really took for granted. On a nice day we go to each others porches and sit 6 feet apart and eat lunch once a week. It’s better than nothing and for me it means a lot.

Let’s pretend we’re not in the digital age for a few seconds. Ever wrote a letter? Try it and see the reaction. My boyfriend sent me a hand written letter and it showed so much effort, and I just really loved it.

Your new “socially distanced” relationship is possible, it’s just more effort. Stay safe and stay home.
