Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, and followed the air stream into her belly to fan the flames. “I can do this. I’ve got this.” Encouraging thoughts echoed in her head, slamming to the sides of her brain.

“Other people have done this before me, and what they have done I can do too.” She repeated the affirmation like a chant aloud, not caring if anyone heard and thought her mad. “I have what it takes,” she uttered under her breath as she summoned an extra bout of power and channeled it to her steady hands.

Her fingers tightened as she flexed her muscles and took hold like never before. “This time. This time I will do it,” she said through strained teeth and a clenched jaw. “Any moment now. It will happen. I’ve just got to persevere.”

Finally, the begrudging screw-top lid let go of its clutch on the glass jar and revealed the sweet apricot jam.
