I was laying in bed, softly on my back, looking up at a white ceiling, smiling like I was watching two lost lovers reconnected after years of absence. But it wasn’t the ceiling that made me smile, nor any lovers, no it was a voice half the world away that, thanks to the wonders of technology, were right in my ears. From a studio apartment in Denmark to an Italian restaurant in Mexico connected by a satellite. But it wasn’t the satellite who pulled the both of us to yet another place, devoid of any geographical sense. Like a little bubble drifting around in the void, only with her and I in it. No, as much as technology has advanced, a satellite couldn’t connect two people like that.

“Can I add 20% tip?”
“Perfecto, thank you very much!”
Her generosity shined through as she paid for her dinner, and left both the restaurant and a Mexican Mariachi band that were not only playing for the customers in the restaurant but for a man half the world away too. On her way home, the sound waves of a half busy Mexican street kept going through her phone, up to an orbiting satellite, and back down to me, in my studio in Denmark. It kept amazing me.

“Wouldn’t it be wonderful, that when you opened your door to your apartment, mine would open too, and you would come through?” I asked her.
“Yeah that would be amazing” she laughed.
Such a silly thought that wouldn’t even be worth entertaining if it wasn’t because of the pure pleasure of the fantasy.

“Hola! Fortnite again?” She was greeting the security guard in her building, who were playing on his Nintendo Switch. A young guy, who looked even younger, especially when playing the Switch.
“You almost home now!” I said. “Finally, you can lay down and relax.”
Her voice was cutting out, as it always did when she walked up the staircase, before losing connection all together.
“Beep, beep! Beep, beep!” my phone told me. I know, I know. She will call me again when she is up in her room.

I got out of bed, thinking I could do a few dishes before she called me back. I took a step towards the kitchen before I heard a noise outside my front door. I froze, and stared at it. The doorknob turned down, the door slowly opened up and there she was, standing in my doorframe.
I was in shock, just standing there, caught between my bed and the kitchen, mouth half open, looking stupidly at her. She laughed and said “I bet you didn’t expected it to actually happen?”
“I.. don’t know.. no, I guess..” I mumbled barely audible.
She laughed again: “You’re so cute.”

She looked amazing. Her hair loose, curled around her face, almost as it caressed her with a touch just as gentle as mine would be later. Her hair grew dark from her scalp, before turning bright in the end. A beautiful sentiment to life, at least mine, before and after I met her.

Her eyes were as big and round as two of the most beautiful cenotes in the world, so deep that if you weren’t careful, you could easily get lost in them. I wondered what wonders they hid and if anyone had ever reached the bottom of them. Probably not. They had a spark too, as a light of hope, beaconing through the cenote, helping the lost diver back to the surface. If I were the diver, I’m not sure I would want to get back, but rather be lost in the beauty of her depths.

But with that thought, she pulled me right back out with her smile, her beautiful smile. Her two dimples acted as a frame for her lips, formed as the most delicate strange flower, reaching for the sky.

She was now right in front of me, took both her hands in mine, and with that a wave of calmness rushed through me, removing all confusion and anxiety. We smiled knowingly at each other.

With the comfort of her hands in mine, I pulled her in close, put my lips on hers, first softly, as if I could ruin them if I pushed too hard, but soon after, the passion overtook my concern, and we were pressed hard against each other, both lips and body. It was as if fireworks exploded inside the both of us, loud and bright, swirling around chaotically. An uncontrollable force of passion let loose in a single kiss. It felt like the earth trembled beneath us, as if it couldn’t hold the weight of our passion.

Later, we found ourselves in my bed, in that same familiar little bubble drifting around in the void. Our fingers intertwined, looking deep into each other’s eyes, talking, talking, talking. It felt almost as all the other late nights on the phone, but it wasn’t. She was right here beside me. It brought warm colours in the studio, like the light of a beautiful orange sunset was shining through my window, for hours and hours.

Her smile faded a bit: “I have to go now” she said.
“But I’ll be back tomorrow”. She got up, turned around and went back out the door in which she had entered. I wasn’t sad though. She would be back tomorrow. And we would do it all over again.
