Irwin’s alarm didn’t go off. He slept through the silence, and when he first cracked his eyes, regret filled his heart.

“Aww geez! Not today!” He barked.

He threw himself out of bed with a combination of anxiety and adrenaline. Yet, as pestered as Irwin was he couldn’t shake the grogginess of previous sleepless night. A swift pull of the closet door and the handle flew across the room.

“Are you being serious right now? COME ON!” He complained.

Hastily he threw his suit on and, scrimmaged through the house to the kitchen. Exhaustion from the past few weeks caught up with him. Months of planning, weeks of tedious work all coming together for today’s presentation, which he was now running late for.

Time was escaping him, but Irwin reckoned that he would be able to slurp down a cup of coffee. Surely, a jolt of caffeine would ward of the drowsiness from a lack of sleep. The machine flicked on, and sat idle.

“Come on, Come on! I don’t have time for this! HURRY!” he whined.

Irwin slapped the top of the coffee maker, and waited. A small drop fell to the bottom of the pot.

“Of all the days! PLEASE!” He groaned.

After what seemed like an eternity the pot was ready. He hurried to pour it and get the hell to work. Caution be damned he took a swig from the cup and instantly hated it.

“Chrisssss dat’s hotz.” he fumed.

The searing liquid scorched his tongue along with the roof of his mouth.

“WHYz!!!!” he cursed.

No time to waste he gathered his briefcase under his elbow and went to the garage. As he was opening the door, his foot caught the threshold which cause him to slip and spill all over himself.

“REALLYS! Aw screwsh it!” He raged.

Irwin lost enough time because of the late start, his drenched wardrobe would have to do. He clambered into the car, and turned the key. The Buick came to life.

“Alrightsh, thank you babysh.” He applauded the car for doing what it is supposed to.

Then he reached over his shoulder and pointed the garage door remote toward the motor.

Click.

The light flashed.

Irwin clicked again. Nothing.

CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. he tapped viciously on the remote.

“DAMNIT!” He yelled.

A grueling lift and Irwin opened the door himself. The Buick rolled to the street without him inside.

“NO NO NO NO!” He howled.

The car descended down the driveway, before he could get in. A sense of relief took hold of him as he gripped the steering wheel. To hell with all the distractions today, he just had to get to the office. The McCormick Project was his first time as director. It would be his premier role in a potentially new pay scale. Not only would this new position buy him a higher standard of living, but recognition he so craved.

Usually, he wouldn’t see these streets at this hour. Usually he would be ahead of the crowd, and in the office pronto. His route was plagued with road construction choking the flow of traffic.

There is only so many times a normal man can smack the steering wheel of his car, Irwin was not normal today. Irwin anguished at each flash of a brake light, or traffic signal. At each halt he slapped the steering wheel.

Finally he made it to the office. When he made it to the conference room, he saw that his team was already assembled and the presentation was underway.

Irwin burst through the door and excused his tardiness. “Sorrysh gentlemenz, thiz haz beens the worsts morningz.”

“No need to apologize, Anthony handled everything flawlessly. In fact we want him to be our go to man going forward. Thank you for introducing him to us.” Mr. McCormick said as he started to leave the conference room.

No need to be civil anymore, Irwin slammed the door and stormed out of the office. He sat down in his car, tightened his grip around the wheel, and screamed.

Defeated he looked over his shoulder, and anticipated to pull out of the parking spot. What happened instead was he shifted the car into drive and he lurched forward slamming into the trunk of the car in front of him.

“It really isn’t my day today!” He grumbled.

The passenger of the car he smashed into exited her vehicle. She walked to the rear of the car and inspected what happened. Irwin, got out and immediately started to apologize.

“I amz So sorryz.” He blurted out.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” She asked.

“I urned my tonguez on coffeesh.” Irwin stated.

“Looks like you are having a hell of a morning.” She commented.

“Youz wouldn’t believe me if I told youz, but yesh.” He agreed.

“It’s not that bad of a scratch, and should buff out. You are in a hurry. Just go.” She stated.

“I have insurancez. I can get this fixed for youz.” He blabbed.

“It’s my dad’s car anyways. He wouldn’t know if I don’t tell him.” She hinted.

“I feelsh bad though. Take my number, and have your dad call me.” Irwin instructed.

“Ok”

He found a piece of paper and wrote his name and number on it. When he handed it to her, he witnessed her beauty. She was stunning with curled red hair. Which framed her hazel eyes perfectly. Her lips were gloss red, and the blue dress she wore flattered her figure gorgeously. Irwin gulped when he looked upon her. He got in his car, and drove away dazed at what he just saw.

Upon arriving home, he crookedly parked and entered his solitary home. He poured himself a scotch and stewed over the day’s events. Every detail in his memory replayed, it was irritating, until he thought of her. A smile stretched upon his face.

Suddenly the phone rang. Irwin winced. No one ever called. He got up and picked up the receiver.

“Hello is this Irwin Callister?” The voice on the other end was a woman.

“Yesh.” He answered.

He could hear her giggle on the phone.

“I won’t tell my dad if you take me to dinner.” She demanded.

“I don’t even know your namez.” Irwin cautioned.

“It’s Shelly McCormick.” She admitted.

Irwin’s smile grew seven times larger, and today wasn’t that bad after all.
