Gee parents, thanks soooo much for the ‘talk’
Many of us can recall the embarrassingly awkward ‘chats’ our parents had with us regard sex. Statements such as “…when two people love each other…” or “…when a man and a woman…” still ring loud in our ears. These discussions waited until puberty was on the horizon and a hastily prepared (term ‘prepared’ used loosely) speech was delivered with each piece of advice sounding more gross by the minute. Sex education at school didn’t achieve much more and resulted in giggling fits with your peers and awkward teachers trying to remain professional in the face of cringe-worthy descriptions about sexual intercourse.
An example of the lack of sex based knowledge possessed by the older generation and the gag-inducing descriptions parents are capable of is illustrated in a hilarious (albeit unintentionally so) pantomime of sorts where a parents awkwardness is laid bare for all to ‘see’. All jokes aside, the parental chat about sex should be consigned to the ‘nice idea, bad execution’ pile of traditions. The thought of sex advice dished out before any relationship discussions is like putting your shoe laces on your foot before the shoe. The ‘talk’ parents can now do, with the benefit of experience, can revolve around things that can enhance connections, the benefits of exploration both sexually and from a relationship level, and to emphasise friendships over sex-ships. The relationship part of a child’s maturation can begin much earlier than puberty age. The ‘talk’ can be a series of conversations with a discussion about sex being the last few episodes, beginning with self identity and how to find your self.
