It’s just a simple assignment, the professor said. Draw a picture of what you want to be when you grow up. What silly project, I thought. Here I am, graduating from college, and my professor wants me to do homework meant for second graders. It wasn’t graded of course. In fact, it wasn’t even required. I didn’t want to do it. But as I sat on the quad with my friends for one of the last times, I kept thinking of the question. What do I want to be? Where do I go?I grabbed an old notebook and started drawing. My friends did, too. As the final orange blasts of sun settled down over the grand Gothic library, we shared our pictures. They were disasters. I drew random stuff. My friend drew thirty question marks. My other friend tried to draw a state-of-the-art research lab but then started scribbling various fried egg recipes she wanted to try. And then I realized what my professor was up to with this so-called simple assignment. He was pointing out that we don’t know what we’re going to do when we grow up. But we pick a direction, change it if we need to, and have fun along the way. That’ll work. Now, it was time to find dinner. Those recipes had made me hungry.
