A Poem

I saw the storms rage within me and eventually pass me by
They left me despondent and in ruins but not broken and not afraid
I can handle the hurricanes of self-hatred and the cyclones of sadness
What I can’t bear is the thought of losing you forever
Let the winds blow me over, let the tornados topple my tombstone
But don’t run away from me, don’t leave me here on this earth by myself
Because I can’t do it without you, I can’t live and breathe without you
The rain pours down in a deluge and I’m blinded but you stay true
You’ve never once turned your back on me no matter the weather
We are in the soup now, we are boiling, we are drowning in the soup
We took the long path to our salvation and yet I know I can stand it
I know I can brave these otherworldly intrusions because of you
And at the end of the day we may be the other world, we may be the outsiders
We may be the dreamers lost in the psychosis of our fantasies
That is all well and good as long as you tell me you’ll be here when I die
You have to witness it, whether it’s tomorrow or forty years from now
I want you to hold my hand as the light goes out in my eyes
And a new light is born in the heavens
I know you will do this for me, because you are a person who serves
I’m afraid, the storm clouds have cleared off but I’m still sinking in the soup
They said we’d be the sorry ones, the unfortunate ones, and now we know
Now we know what it is like to be crushed between two opposing forces
When the waves overtakes you and you can’t ride it out
And you have to take the plunge into the cold, dark water below
I’m in the water now, there is no one to save me, I reach up to take your hand
And another wave crashes and the atoms split and the electrons spill out
There is a tremendous release of energy and I sing, oh do I sing
For the pain is excruciating but the sight of it is sheer ecstasy
The most basic matter coming apart, waves collapsing, entangling us
I love you even though I fear you might not be real
This is the magic show at the magic hour and I am the host
A round of applause, please, for the men and women who have felt what I feel
A round of applause for those who have suffered and continued to do so
A round of applause for those who left the heaven and descended into hell
A round of applause for the brave, the strong and the relentless
To you, ladies and gentlemen, always to you
I put down my microphone and pick up my baton and twirl it through the air
From its ends flow colorful streaks, I am writing my love song on the breeze
There is no need to be afraid anymore, feel loved and make peace
We are here to serve and we will do all we can for as long as we can
And that will have to be enough
If another storm comes rolling through, and if a wave comes crashing down
Send your sorrow to the magic show
Where broken mirrors speak wisdom to infants
