Political Zombies, the Misguided, & the Deceived

One of my best friends in life posted the following right after the U.S. Senate voted not to convict Donald Trump. I usually laugh at my friend’s post or just take note. After the following was posted, I posted: Take it Down.

Here’s my friend’s post:

I should add my friend also referred to them as traitors in his post.

After I posted, “take it down,” people attacked my request. And people began posting how much they supported the original post calling the seven (7) Senators who voted to convict “traitors.”

The original post got 42 likes and is still picking up likes. It wasn’t on FB. It was on LinkedIn. The social media site for job seekers.

Yet, even that now has deteriorated into the madness of the times. Conspiracy theories. False information. Name calling.

Slowly, the madness is reconfiguring itself. Here is some of it:

In Texas, that recently failed and frozen state, elected Republican leaders blamed their failure to protect their residents from the cold on the “Green New Deal,” a policy proposal that has not yet been implemented anywhere.

Tucker Carlson, on Fox News, claimed the same. It is a bold faced lie.

In Michigan, the Majority leader of the state senate claims that the attempt to overthrow the government is an orchestrated hoax by left wing groups.

Ron Johnson, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, claims left wing provocateurs and fake Trump supporters were responsible for the siege at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In legislatures across the country, legislatures controlled by the GOP are introducing anti-voting access laws in response to their losses in the election of 2020.

CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Committee, is holding their annual meeting in Florida, and the defeated leader and former President has been invited to speak.

The invitation was extended despite the fact he just sought to overthrow the government of the U.S.

In other words, the converted are still convinced their guy won the election. Politicians. Media personalities trying to stay popular. Ordinary citizens.

It is as if they have been hypnotized.

Here is a quote to think about going to forward when you ask yourself what is wrong with people and some of our institutions on this issue. It is from the late, Carl Sagan. It is on point:

Carl Sagan

I post this quote every time I hear nonsense like what my friend posted. My friend, five years ago, in supporting the former President, thought he had boarded Noah’s Ark. But he really got on the Titanic and it sank.

It must hurt.

For those Republicans who threw their principles in the trash and backed a guy who is a racist, sexist, misogynist, and an underworld figure as their standard bearer politician, it hurts.

It would be humiliating to admit you’ve been had. Get over it.

For many, they have always embraced his worldview. They deserve their shame. They likely have been a closet white nationalist or racist who thought the rise of the next “Reich” was here.

It isn’t. But times remain precarious.

Just as some people in the world would a car full of dynamite into the a building, or strap on a vest of explosives and blow themselves up in a mall for this cause, they are out there.

Pay attention.
