POF : Just encountered my first scammer!

POF : Just encountered my first scammer!

I joined POF for the umpteenth time, and quickly met a handsome guy that lived about 2 hours from me. We quickly exchanged numbers, and he decided I was everything he was searching for.

The first red flag was when I went to look at his profile again, the person on his profile was a different nationality and just a completely different profile. I did a google reverse image search of him and nothing comes up.

He claimed he was an orphan, only child with only his aunt in another state. He was a contractor. He had a French accent and was hard to understand when we spoke on the phone. His area code was a far away state that he never mentioned.

We did a video chat, but it would always drop, and would be frozen most of the time. He always seemed to have me on speaker phone and I always heard people in the background.

He was always texting me telling me how much he loved me and that I was the answer to his prayers and I needed to promise I’d always love him. Mind you this was 2 days.

So he flew to Texas for a “contract proposal”, and he text me saying he had to talk to me about his job. I’m thinking he’ll tell me he is going to stay in Texas or have to move there.

He begins to tell me in muffled, broken English that his best friend and business partner had embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from him. How did he know? The bank told him. Where is this friend now? Fled to Germany. This is the biggest contract of his life and he doesn’t know what to do. He has me, so it will be okay.

Later that night I get a phone call from him. He’s so upset. The shipment of supplies are here from China and they are stuck at customs, and he has no money because of the thieving friend.

He asks me for money. Do I know anyone I can get money from? Do I have a credit card? What is my credit score? Who is my cell phone company? What is the login to my cell phone account? He tells me in muffled English (always on speaker phone) some plan about selling cell phones, I don’t quite understand what he’s saying.

All the alarms are going off in my head. I immediately ask for him to prove himself. Send a pic of him with his ID (he flew, he has ID), send a selfie with my name next to his face, or send a pic of his business card. Just tell me the name of the business.

Nothing. He wouldn’t do any of it. Just accuse me of not trusting him, not ready for love, not willing to take a chance.

I went to bed, thinking he would change his mind if he was serious. But no. More accusations of being distrustful. Of not willing to take a chance.

He even told me he flew in a private jet and that he was just a one man show in his business.

Thanks for reading my story. LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR PROOF.

  1. Yikes. Glad you figured out he was a scammer quickly. I’ve found that’s the case with most, since they’re pretty transparent scams oftentimes.

I personally only date people within an 30 minute drive meet up distance. I feel like the people willing to invest into heavily into a stranger for long distance relationship are most likely scammers anyways. I might be wrong, but this method hasn’t failed me yet. I need a meet up within two weeks of talking or they’re not serious about meeting up at all.
