POF : Plenty Of f̶i̶s̶h̶ … fake profiles.

POF : Plenty Of f̶i̶s̶h̶ … fake profiles.

So I decided to do some testing.

I set up a legit account as myself.

I properly filled in my profile and upload multiple images.

I even had friends and family proofread my profile to make sure it was fine.

Then I wrote some software in c# to collect usernames from POF and message them.

The messages are fairly generic they are basically permutations of « hi how are you ».

I believe if someone likes the way you look, your first message won’t matter all that much.

I’m a year in now I started in August last year.

I’ve hit want to meet « Yes » on every single profile recommended.

I’ve messaged over 13,942 people (doing around 50 a day).

There have been 11,711 replies.

I have an 83.9% response rate.

I’m still single 😉

11 of them are human… of the 11 actual humans who responded all of them either have a disability, deformity or obesity that is preventing them from finding someone.

The rest of these messages fall into the following five categories:

— Add me on WhatsApp -> Pay per view porn link.

— Add me on WhatsApp -> Given stolen credit card details -> Asked to sign up for a website.

— Direct link to pay per view porn.

— Send me an email -> Email reply is a link to pay per view porn.

— Call me on a premium rate number.

Heres some observations:

— Almost all of the spambots have the same tagline, in badly translated English usually like « I like have fun time ».

— Almost all of the spambots are using the same images for multiple accounts, I’ve had 37 want to meet replies this morning and they are all different ages and locations and the same image.

Why can POF not deal with these fake profiles?

I’m a programmer I write PHP for a living and I’m telling you now I could write something to filter all of these fake profiles in a week.

POF is 16 years old… no excuses.

POF you take payments from people in exchange for them for viewing people who want to meet them. These people you are charging them to contact are not even real people. Does that not bother you?

So a month ago I decided to do the test the other way around.

I have a female profile with an image of a friend (used with consent).

Its early for statistics but so far its looking like ~30% bots and ~70% real people.

So what is POF?

POF is a free website that lets lonely males locate and talk to bots.

Let me save you from the cycle of loneliness that’s keeping you on POF.

Now find another dating site.

In no particular order I’ve had replies from real people on the following:

Badoo

Tinder (not many people here looking for long term relationships)

OkCupid

Bumble

Will post all my stats of both accounts when i’ve made it into a nice PDF.

  1. Are you trying to get males to unsubscribe to improve your odds?

My experience is completely opposite of yours. I set up my profile right at one month ago (August 24). I’ve gotten messages from about twenty five women. They initiated contact, I haven’t had to send a first message yet. Maybe two thirds were clearly bots. About ten were real people. Half of those were further than I would prefer (an hour plus drive). I have my second meet up scheduled tonight.

The primary difference between us might be age. I’m at retirement age and am interested in women near my age. This is a point where women outnumber men (we die sooner and some men are looking for young stuff).

I have issue with you contacting women who have « a disability, deformity or obesity that is preventing them from finding someone ». You shouldn’t contact someone who you find repugnant. It’s fucking inconsiderate and callous. Very much a morally wrong thing to do and makes you no better than the scammers.

  2. > I’ve messaged over 13,942 people (doing around 50 a day).

Which would have lasted about 3 days before POF would have banned your profile.

As there is a threshold of ~20 messages per day that triggers a flag.

    > 11 of them are human… of the 11 actual humans who responded all of them either have a disability, deformity or obesity that is preventing them from finding someone.

So you are saying out of all the people that your bot messaged only 11 were dumb enough not to fall for a bot.

    Has Harvard contacted you yet?

  3. It is definitely a lot of bots, and I also noticed that [match.com](https://match.com) is about to get sued for that. Ashleymadison got sued over that too. POF has been a LOT of spam on it, and so far no 1 match in Bumble in 7 months, and I’m waiting on OKCupid to do the same. I think I have a better chance going to a church basement’s singles event than I do on these apps, but hey, that’s my 2 cents, for now.
