Chapter 5

The loud screaming of a crying child echoed all around Maddy, as she stood once again in the path of blinding white light. The same two silhouettes were in place, but they seemed to be getting closer to her this time. She took a few steps toward them, and as she got closer she was overcome by a sense of familiarity. She kept moving toward the silhouettes, and a third one appeared. This time though, she knew exactly who it was. It was her.

She stopped in her tracks, and realized that the two people were not coming toward her current form, but toward her younger self. She watched as one of the silhouettes placed something around her neck and kissed her on the forehead as she stood in place still screaming.

She attempted to walk toward the silhouettes, but the closer she got, it seemed the further away they were. One of the silhouettes looked up and stared her in the face. It then pointed to the sky, and immediately Maddy jumped out of her sleep.

Breathing heavily, she rushed downstairs to find Nana sitting at the dining room table.

“That necklace,” she said. “Where did it come from? Who gave it to me?”

“Have a seat Maddy,” Nana said as she pulled a chair out for her. “It’s time you finally learn why I’ve tried my best to keep this family’s past from you.”

Maddy began to explain all the weird dreams that she had been experiencing, and all the weird trances she’d been falling into the past few days.

Nana took a deep sigh.

“Sweetheart, we wanted to keep this from you until you were 18 and had the right to choose your own path, but it seems as though the Universe thought otherwise.”

She began to explain everything that Maddy had been wondering about for years.

One day, I was on my way back to my apartment after my last class, and there was this boy about my age lying in a field. He looked like he’d been beaten up, so naturally, I ran to his aide. When I made it over to him, she said, he could barely speak a word, and the little he was speaking, I couldn’t understand. I sat with him for 20 minutes before he finally opened his eyes. We made eye contact, and that’s how I knew that your grandfather was the man that I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with.

We had begun to spend a lot of time together. He’d always just appear out of nowhere. I’d be in class, then I’d look out of the window and there he would be staring and smiling at me. For as long as we dated, he never took me to his home, and I had always wondered why he got so defensive when I asked. I figured he was just homeless and didn’t want me to judge him because of it, but the real reason was a lot more surprising than I could have ever thought.

He had walked me home from a date one night, and when he thought I had made it into the house, I snuck around the back and I followed him. We walked a few blocks down the street from my house closer to my school, and where I had first found him lying in the field. He turned back to make sure he was alone, and then he walked into the dense woods surrounding the field. Of course, I followed, she continued. When I finally caught up with him, I was shocked as we walked upon a small cottage. I was so overcome with excitement because I had finally gotten to see his home. Now I just wondered why he’d not wanted me to see where he lived.

The cottage was beautiful, and it was covered in vines and other greenery. He couldn’t have been ashamed of it. I had to figure it out, so I walked a little closer to the cottage and that’s when I saw your grandfather standing in his backyard with giant wings stretching from his back. He was being showered in white light, but it was coming from inside of him. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I gasped and turned to run away, but as soon as I turned around there he was.

“I knew that you were following me the whole time,” he said.

I jumped.

He walked toward me, and I began to scream.

“Let me explain!” He yelled as he also tried to comfort me.

I was afraid.

I had never seen anything like that before that day. He turned and walked away, but the wings were no longer there. I sat in the grass for almost an hour in disbelief until I found the strength to confront him about what I had seen.

“What the hell was that?” I yelled Nana said.

He went on to tell me about his past.

Your grandfather told me that he was an angel that had been sent down to watch over me from a very young age, and while doing so he fell in love with me the older I grew. Me finding him in that field was staged, and I fell right for it.

Nana began to laugh.

From that day forward, she continued the story, I didn’t want to see him. I was madly in love with him, but knowing what he was, scared me and the only way I knew how to deal with it was to avoid him. He still randomly appeared out of nowhere, but I just kept ignoring him. This went on for about a month. Until one day, I had just come from the diner with my study group, and I got the idea to go and check up on him. He was chopping wood on the side of his house when I arrived.

“I knew you were coming, I just didn’t know when.” He said as he approached me smiling from ear to ear.

I grinned a little and told him that for me to be with him, I needed to know every single detail of what was going on. He was more than happy to tell me. At the time, I didn’t know that he was breaking so many rules by even having contact with me, let along telling me all the information he was telling me.

He told me that the language that he was speaking the first day we met, was Nimmish, a language older than the Earth itself. It was the language of the Divine.

I spent the rest of that day with him.

We’d begun to see each other more often as if things had never happened the way that they did, and then things changed.

I had gone to his house one day because he’d planned to take me on a picnic date, but he wasn’t there. I had looked all around for him, but there was no sign of him. I figured he’d forgotten about our date, so I just went home and finished up my homework until I fell asleep.

When I fell asleep, I immediately fell into a trance-like state just like the one you described. I saw your grandfather, but he had been chained to two columns. He was crying as these weird beams of light began to surround him, and thunder roared through the sky. He turned his head and looked me directly in my eyes, and that’s when I woke up. Those dreams kept recurring night after night.

Months went by, and I found out that I was pregnant with your father. I was so afraid because I didn’t know how I was going to raise a baby all while finishing my degree. This was unheard of during this time. I also didn’t know how I was going to explain to my family that the father of my child had disappeared out of nowhere and that he was an angel moreover.

I was sitting in my apartment preparing for my bath when someone started to knock at my door. It was your grandfather. I smiled and jumped into his arms with glee, and then I slapped him 4 times. Once for each month that he had left me alone and by myself. He laughed and then gave me the strongest hug. We sat on my sofa, and he explained to me what had happened.

He told me that it was forbidden for angels to fornicate with humans, let along the human that they had been sent to watch over and protect. He also told me that he had broken a lot of other rules by exposing himself to me that night I had followed him. The reason he had been taken was that in the heavenly realm, news travels days, months, and years before we on Earth know about it. They’d known that I was pregnant before I had even known and because I was pregnant, Nana said, he had to be judged.

“I reached out to you in your dreams every night,” he said.

That was true. He checked up on me, but it was still scary not knowing if I’d ever be able to see him again. We didn’t have Instachat and Tweetbook like you kids do nowadays.

Maddy laughed.

“So, what happened after all of this? It’s been years and you’re still married.” She asked.

Well, you see, Nana began to finish her story.

After he had returned from being away for so long, he was given an ultimatum. The first choice was that he would have to give up your father and me, and also your father would have to be stripped of his divinity. The second choice was that he and your father would both be stripped of their divinity, and he could stay with us. Guess which one he chose?

He chose me, but in doing so, he pissed off the Hierarchy of Angels. They’re like city council members, but for the heavenly realm. He gave up his divinity, and because of this, once your father was born, they took him away from us. Your grandfather did everything he could to stop it from happening, but he failed. We were to tell everyone that he’d been put up for adoption and then just go on with our lives.

We’d been searching for him, but we never found out anything. Your grandfather had even tried using some of his higher connections, but to no avail we never found him.

Years had gone by, and then one day in the true nature of his father, your father came knocking on our door.

He had reached the point of his training where he was allowed to roam the Earth in his human form, while still fulfilling his divine duties. He could visit and even live with us now.

He told us that he had been watching over us every chance that he could, and he also told us of all his adventures and all the places he’d been. He then began to tell us of a young woman that he’d fallen in love with. The human he was supposed to be protecting.

“My mother?” Maddy questioned.

“Yes, your mother,” Nana responded.

Your grandfather took him outback and had a discussion with him. To this day, I don’t know what was talked about, but I can only guess he was warning him of where it would all lead him.

Your father was very rebellious and wanted to do things his way. He followed in your grandfather’s footsteps and got your mother pregnant anyways. Seeing him and your mother go through what we had gone through was like reliving our worst nightmare.

Maddy sat back in her seat in shock.

“So, are you telling me that I’m half-human half-angel?” She asked.

Nana grabbed her hands and smiled.

“Yes, dear.”

“So, if I’m half human half angel, why didn’t I get taken away like my dad did?” Maddy asked.

“That’s where things get tricky,” Nana said.

While carrying you, your mother had been doing research on children who had been born half-human half-angel, and upon her research, she found a witch doctor who specialized in these types of occurrences. The witch doctor created your pendant for you. Because of your angelic heritage, you give off a higher frequency than the normal human being. That pendant was to protect you from lower vibrational beings, people who hunt Divines like you, as well as from The Hierarchy.

“That girl that you used to be friends with? Leslie?” Nana sneered. “Her family has been on the hunt for Divines for centuries. I knew that friendship wasn’t going to last. It’s in her blood to hate people like you.”

Maddy could not believe what she had just been told.

You were supposed to be taken away at birth, but your father insisted that you and your mother run away with him. He was given a ring to protect himself, and your mother a pendant as well. She wasn’t a Divine, but she needed to be protected. Up until their disappearance when you were 5, you all moved all around the country trying not to be found out, but somehow your father’s past always seemed to catch up to him.

“That is why we have got to get your pendant back,” Nana said as she got up from the table. “I wouldn’t be surprised if The Hierarchy weren’t on their way to confiscate you now.”

Maddy was still sitting at the table in disbelief.
