Dating : Dating in 2021, What Does It All Mean?

I just snoozed and deactivated my Bumble, because it just seems too far fetched at the moment. I know waiting till all my ducks are in a row to find someone is probably not the move, but it kind of seems like that is the only move. I know I won’t be single indefinitely, but maybe not adding to the pressure I’m already under to “find true love” right now isn’t what life is about.

I miss the days of meeting randos at gas stations and Starbucks. You know what I’m talking about. That impromptu date you went on with a total stranger, only to get calls and texts two weeks later that they need you to sign for their bail. Ah, the good old days when dating was simple. What, only me? Yes, that is a true story and yes I also blocked him immediately.

Not that my vibe calibrator was all that great IRL, but online, these people could be anyone! Using FaceApp, or worse, using old pictures! Fellas, let me give you a little help here, don’t put a picture from 10 years ago as your first picture on your dating profile. Because yes, people might stop to look based on that picture, but the pictures get more advanced (in age) as you scroll. STOP. Not that there’s anything wrong with aging, it happens to us all. And yes your younger picture is YOU, technically, but it isn’t you TODAY. So what you’re a silver fox, some people are into that (me, I’m those people).

So what I’m asking for is to dare authenticity and I guess that goes for me too. No more filters on photos or the perfect lighting. I can do it…I think. I think as a culture we have become so aware, weary, scared of flaws, but that outlook is wholly unrealistic. We have flaws, we are imperfect. And when you love someone, even if those things get under your skin, you still love them.

And that’s what I’m looking for, that, “I don’t wake up with perfect hair and good breath” kind of love. And I guess I have to find a way to “date” now and in the future that will help me find this.
