There was once a horse who never looked at anyone, and everyone was very confused about that. From childhood into adulthood, he was always that same flavor of strange, and so gossip forever pooled around him.

The dog said he was haughty, and the owl thought he was mischievous, while the cat claimed he was visually impaired. The sheep were afraid of him, and the ravens were suspicious of him, and all the mice avoided his section of the field. The goats weren’t too sure about him, and the rabbits only dropped hints about their opinions, but everyone — everyone — had something to say.

Finally, the hen pulled everyone individually aside. She had a warm way about her that made her incredibly easy to talk to, to open up to, and she used this to her advantage as she said the same thing to everyone in ways that made sense to each of them. The fact that the horse didn’t look at anyone, that, she said, was just how the horse was, and they should all just shut up about it.
