POF : Is something wrong with the preferences?
On my profile preferences I said I would not date anyone who smokes or had children.
ALL I GET CONTACTED BY ARE SMOKERS AND PEOPLE WITH KIDS.
Is pof messed up or are they somehow finding me and contacting that way.

Your preferences are just that. Put them on your profile and search by them, but they are not enforced by the website as messaging filters.
POF is the Wild West of dating apps because anyone can message anyone. We have to filter people out by looking at their profile and telling them it’s a no go (nicely) that way. And blocking or reporting them if they are mean about it. That’s how POF works.
No one reads the profile, especially the guys looking for a hookup.
