The strategies of argumentative discourse
💡 The objective of the argumentative discourse is to defend or from combat a point of view. The choice of a argumentation strategy is determined according to the issue, the theme and the argumentation situation. 💡
The rebuttal
The refutation consists in examining each of the arguments put forward by a thesis in order to contest its merits. At the end of this refutation, the author proposes a new thesis which formulates his own point of view on the question.
Concession
Make a concession, it is to accept an aspect of an opposing thesis, either to show that one partially adheres to it, or to anticipate a possible objection. The concession is indicated by words or expressions such as » certainly…. But… « , » you are going to tell me that … but I will answer you that … « , » some think that … but … « , » I could be objected that … but … « .
The confrontation
The confrontation compare each of the two arguments, show the points of divergence and convergence. It results in the expression of a personal point of view on the matter. Two different theses do not necessarily mean two diametrically opposed points of view on the same subject.
Membership
Membership fully embraces the thesis developed by an author. To mark one’s adherence to a thesis amounts to demonstrating its merits by means of arguments.
Critical examination
The examination critical reviews the different arguments that support a thesis, showing its strengths and weaknesses and taking stock of this assessment.
