  1. So the US justifications for ending the war with nuclear bombs were…two of the primary reasons they were at war with Japan in the first place? That’s a bad thesis mate be more specific. Think about contingency

  2. Tbh I’d talk more about the catastrophic losses felt at Okinawa and how that could be used as a microcosm for what an invasion of mainland japan would be like. Also you could say that the detonations were essentially warnings to the soviets as both sides were preparing for a Cold War since at that point the end of the reich was immanent. Just think of the planed Operation Unthinkable. Also consider that it would have been politically impossible to not drop the bombs since billions of tax dollars had been diverted to the manhattan project. Also to not drop them would extend the war unnecessarily and would make Truman personally responsible for any US military deaths after their completion if they weren’t used. Listen to Dan Carlin’s ‘destroyer of worlds’ for some good info, also there’s tons of books on the topic 🙂

  3. I’m not a huge historian or anything, but I don’t think that’s the reason the bombs were dropped. I’m pretty sure we wanted to to surrender without anymore loss of American life.

  4. Bombs were absolutely justified when considering the casualties a mainland Japan invasion would bring. The bombs saved lives on both sides as the Japanese would have fought to the last and the allies expected over 1.5 million casualties as a result.

  5. Im just gonna go ahead and say it. « Can I get a thesis statement in this bitch » is not getting the recognition it deserves for the genius that it is! All journalists should interview people in positions of power JUST like this

  6. I did a presentation about this for my engineering ethics class! According to engineering ethics, the scientists who made the bomb were unethical in its creation and encouraging its use by the military as engineers are supposed to hold public safety as priority number 1. Although this does get complicated cause there was a war going on. Also, according to the proportionality principle of war, the bombs were justified because using them would result in fewer casualties on both sides.

  7. You might want to consider the impact it would have on the Soviet Union as a possible justification as well. If the US had charged into Japan and pretty much saw a massacre in the tens of millions on both sides, then the USSR would have had a massive upper hand in the coming decades.

The US would’ve been weakened militarily, but more importantly would’ve been massively demoralized in the hundreds of thousands to millions they lost in taking Japan. The lack of morale means that containment would’ve likely never even been a policy and countries like Korea and Vietnam would’ve fallen without proxy wars or American resistance. If the Soviet Union didn’t know about nuclear weapons (as most in the US government didn’t know because it was such a secret project), then it’s possible that they could’ve attacked Europe and begun World War III by trying to take over a broken Poland, Germany, and France and a weathered UK and US. If the US didn’t use nuclear weapons, but the Soviet spies found out about it, the Soviet plan to blitzkrieg through all of Europe with nuclear weapons could have easily been realized although it is almost a hundred times more likely the Soviet Union would’ve used the nuclear weapons as a way to force surrender than as actual weapons.

I would say that in the context of Soviet relations and the fight in becoming a superpower, the US was justified in using the nuclear bomb. I would also say that in the context of Japan, the US was justified because it led to lower losses overall compared to a slaughter of most of Japan’s men in an all out total war.

  8. It’s important to point out, that Japan was on their way towards developing their own atomic bomb. Their project was actually further along than Germany’s, as Germany had decided to nix their bomb project. Japan was actually doing uranium enrichment for testing.

  9. Lmaoooooo. This is amazing but no. The bombs justification really can’t be measured because that means measuring the value of human life. That said Truman argued that the amount of American lives that would have been at risk or lost invading the island of japan (much harder to do because its an island) would be too high. of the Japanese willingness to die to their last breath undoubtably in this internet scholars opinion reinforced this belief.

I’ve got no source for you and I’m sure it’s well passed the due date. Thank you for this gem though A++

  10. My personal issue with the atom bombs is the targeting of civilians. We could have wiped out their military with only collateral civilian casualties. Instead, we targeted civilians. Shameful.

  11. I think the greatest justification is the demonstration of their mass destructive power to discourage any further attack on American soil, which so far has been successful. One could argue, that the introduction of nuclear weapon is the main reason there has been peace between the major powers of the world for so long.

  12. Maybe write about how it was retaliation for what happened at Pearl Harbor however also an opportunity for the US to flex it’s Big Dick Policy as a way to establish itself as the “Big Daddy/Don’t fuck with me” country.

Since they’re weren’t directly in the war, using it on Germany from the get go “would’ve been like whoa dude wtf man, you were wish washy about this whole thing anyways America (US)”. However, since the Land of the Rising Douche decided to poke a militant bear in its asshole, provided the perfect opportunity for the US of A to drop 2 nuclear dookies on them, while using the good ol’ “well he started it and they were the bad guy anyways” argument.

  13. it was, japan may have not surrendered to our terms without it, many more on both sides of the conflict would have died for the same outcome, and would have resulted in a much less successful japan than the one that we see today
