Ciel Sugarin

(A short story of a trans girl and her non-binary friend.)

Once upon a time, there was a little boy, one who was somewhat sad and, above all, misunderstood. He was one of those children that no one wanted to play with, everyone called him weird and they isolated him from the group; however, this child was not weird, he was just a bit different.

There is nothing wrong with being different, is there? It’s even wonderful to have something that others don’t have; it is even charming. But the kid doesn’t know about this, he just cries because nobody understands him, but they don’t seem to want to understand him either.

The kid follows a routine, he leaves school and walks home; there is no one there. His parents are at work, and he is alone again. He goes to his parent’s room, and inside, there is his mother’s dressing table with beautiful items: perfumes, jewellery, and make-up.

At first, it was curiosity, but little by little it became a habit.

It’s a feeling he can’t describe, to apply make-up, to smell those sweet scents on his own body, and to put on those sparkling jewellery, it all gives him comfort that no other person has given him so far. After all, it is all material, but it’s nevertheless reassurance.

The child grows up, but he remains just as misunderstood as ever until once, this changes when he meets another person.

That person is another boy, a very, very beautiful boy. He has long hair, small lips, and pretty eyelashes. Gradually, he feels that he is finding another warmth that is not merely material. It is impressive how a hug can make you feel a thousand times better than a bit of make-up, and that is exactly what he feels in those moments.

“So what?” his now best friend once said to him, “What does it matter what other people say?” and that was simply the answer, it was always the answer but he could never bring himself to say it out loud. That day, he was no longer a boy. That day, this kid started to be herself, a true self that was hidden for a long, long time.

Nothing matters, only what you believe is best for your well-being.

Her friend is somewhat peculiar; he genuinely looks like a girl, his long hair doesn’t even help him in this. But there is something even more peculiar about him: her friend wears skirts, he wears make-up, and he likes to look pretty. There are days when her friend looks completely like a girl, while at other times, he looks like a boy, one with long hair; and he says he is twofold in many ways: he is a girl, and he is a boy, but often, he is simply nothing at all.

But her friend smiles, he is not sad like her. Her friend is brave enough to be the way he wants to be, with or without a skirt, he is unaffected by the opinions of others. It’s something to admire, but then, that same friend confessed to her: “It’s not easy.” And so, they both cried together, and with the warmth of an embrace, comfort returned at last.

In the end, it doesn’t matter.
