This ghazal has been written by Mirza Asad-Ullah Khan Ghalib, which vividly depicts the helplessness of the lover! The beloved is the epitome of beauty, brilliance and desirable even if she is unfaithful!! Ghalib lived from December 1797 to 1869. He witnessed the first war of independence of 1857,although he presumed it would fail. He was from a family of soldiers and the first to break the tradition. He was very poor in handling financial matters to the extent that he had to go through actual imprisonment for more than three months for dues not paid. He was fond of moving in high society although his finances did not support it.

Ghalib has been accused of using difficult wordings and a look at the long list of important words proves the point!

  1. Here is Chitra Singh, rightfully a maestra herself, who has sung this ghazal, probably, one of her best, wherein she had excelled herself under the music direction of late Jagjit Singh. She is a Bengali ghazal singer, who was married to maestro Jagjit Singh. She had stopped singing in 1990 when her 20 years old son expired in a road accident. She is 76 years old now. She had practically retired from music scene in 1990. This ghazal is from the TV serial ‘ Mirza ghalib’.

The same ghazal has been sung by Jagjit Singh ,in the same TV serial.

Important words:

संग-ओ-ख़िश्त: stone or rubble; दैर: temple or mosque; हरम: literally the pyramid but means any monument here, also means the zanankhana, where ladies live in isolation; आस्ताँ: abode; जमाल-ए-दिल-फ़रोज़: face that lights up the heart; जमाल-ए-दिल-फ़रोज़: a face as brilliant as the mid-day Sun; नज़्ज़ारा-सोज़:spectacle of ardour and passion; दश्ना-ए-ग़म्ज़ा: dagger of coquetry;जाँ-सिताँ: beloved; नावक-ए-नाज़:arrows of love; क़ैद-ए-हयात: prison for the whole life; बंद-ए-ग़म: bondage of unhappiness; हुस्न-ए-ज़न:optimistic expectation; बुल-हवस: Debauch; ए’तिमाद: confidence; ग़ुरूर-ए-इज्ज़-ओ-नाज़: pride for the beloved;हिजाब-ए-पास-ए-वज़अ:honour of the circumstances; ख़ुदा-परस्त: pious, having faith in God, ‘ग़ालिब’-ए-ख़स्ता: Ghalib in distress, fallen on bad times;

After all it is my heart and not stone or rubble, why would it not overflow with grief and pain?

I weep a thousand times, why should anyone torment me, harass me?

It is not a temple or the mosque ,also it is not a pyramid

Neither is it a door to her house nor a threshold of her abode !

I am sitting on the road she frequents, why should the rivals evict me?

When she is the one whose face lights up the heart, a face that glows like the midday Sun!

She herself is a heart wrenching spectacle, an object of passion and ardour, why should she hide her face in a veil ?

Oh my beloved ! You are the epitome of coquetry, throwing innumerable deadly arrows of love, from which escape is impossible!

Agreed it is the reflection of your face and not your face ,still why should I come face to face with it?

Imprisonment for life or bondage of suffering are one and the same!

So why should I be reprieved from pain and sorrow even before death?

Oh beautiful, with a reputation of favourable expectations,

I have been saved from shame of the reputation of a debauch!

I have faith, confidence in my own self, why should I test the rivals?

Here, she ,the beloved, is proud of her status her grandeur and I can not compromise with my honour!

We were not strolling together like lovers, we were not friendly,

why should she call me to the gathering?

Yes, she is not God fearing or pious, agreed she is unfaithful, treacherous!

Anyone who has faith in his God, who cares for his heart, why should he visit her neighbourhood?

Which works or routines have stopped just because Ghalib is in apathetic and battered condition!

Why should Ghalib weep uncontrollably, copiously and why should he continue to lament, complain?
