What are we without friends or associates? Those people that cheer us up when we’re down or give us that extra push to help get us across that extra mile. Somewhere in life you meet people that will be connected with you forever; people that will never forget you even if you don’t share words often; the type of person that would drop in a line just to see how you are doing. There are true friends that look past your shortcomings and just want to be a part of your life because they love you; they feel unconditional affection for you regardless of how you look, how much you weigh, or your social status. Is it good to have several friends, or just a select few that you can count with one hand? In today’s world, the word “friend” can be used loosely. Often times we network with associates and consider only a select few of people not born of kin as family. In Randy’s case he has some support and some would call it fueled courage to endure the unknown. Is the act of dating a primal sport? You take the time to examine the individual, an attraction sets in and depending on the type of standoff, you may begin to salivate a little. Then you learn what makes them tick, find out if they are formidable enough, then you move in to subdue; overcoming challenges to win them over. You’re not necessarily waiting behind the bushes ready to pounce like a stalker; you’re more ready and willing to explore the thrill or mystery of the chase. Especially if the man is mysterious and the woman is breathtaking.

The scenery before us is without color, faded with gray-scale contrast as if this is encounter between Tina and Randy was past tense. The two of them are walking through the park. Randy exclaims “Alright, I’m not in to the whole typical dating concept; carrying rules and regulations of how to date appropriately.”

“I would ask…why?” Tina asked.

“I’m more interested in starting at an even keel, just hanging out and not trying too hard; just being yourself and existing to where you meet that other person in the middle.”

“You sound like you know from experience.”

“There should not be a restricted pattern, or limits to a material act for a man to gain a woman’s love.”

“Really? The “L” word, so soon?”

“It’s not like I’m proposing, unless you’re implying-”

“I do know of a chapel close by.” Tina replied.

Randy smiles. “Then what would we use as rings? Blow pops?”

“Make mine sour green apple.” Tina chuckled.

“So what would be the right time for someone to meet the family? How many dates?” Randy asked.

“Um, maybe my dog first, after a good while. He’s family.”

“Your dog?”

“Yes.”

“A stinky, funky ass dog?”

“Well hey, dogs are loyal unlike some people I know. Try leaving my abode without a hole in your heart briefs; then you’re a good candidate.” Tina replied.

“How’d you know?” Randy asked.

“Know what?”

“That they’re hearts, on my underwear.”

“You’re lying.”

Randy shrugs his shoulders.

“Okay now I’ve gotta see.” Tina wrestles with Randy while trying to pull on his pants. They both chuckle and Randy opens his arms wide. “See, this is what I was talking about. We’re just being ourselves and having a good laugh. No strings attached.”

“Tell me more, do teach.”

“Love is a gift, it is something you obtain through choice.”

“Okay, so what else should NOT be done?”

“Not expecting too much from the person you’re with. Just chill and not complicate things. Let it all evolve naturally.”

“Hmm, good advice.”

“So tell me Tina, what do you enjoy doing the most?”

“Modeling.”

“What other things are you good at?”

“How do you know, I’m good at modeling?”

“Well you’re strutting right now, and each step you take makes me skip a beat.” Randy smiles and places one hand on his chest.

Tina blushes before she replies. “Modeling, science, and cleaning.”

“Cleaning, really?”

“Yeah! Is there a problem?”

“Yeah! Who LIKES cleaning?” Randy answered.

“I do!”

“Well, make sure you wear knee pads when you’re scrubbing them floors. Wax on, wax off!”

“Well, without sanitation we’d be up to our ears in garbage. Wouldn’t we be? It’s the job no one wants to do.” Tina said.

“Build a machine to do the cleaning for you. Think bigger.” Randy replied.

“A nerd would say that.”

“Guilty as charged! However, when you’re not modeling at least you can focus your mind on something else.”

“What are you, Dr. Phil?”

“Life will be that much sweeter, with the more skills you apply into the real world. You’ll eat and sleep with the thought of happiness. Love surely follows.”

The gray-scale aspect ratio ends as true color returns. Tina’s eyes open in her bedroom. She looks over at the pillow beside her to see it empty. She moans…

Tina’s limbs are sprawled out and her bedding is as if a hurricane had its way within her room. Her phone rings and she answers it. “Hello?” Yvette is in her car listening to loud music. “It’s Yvette, now I know you’re not still sleeping. The birds are singing, the sun is unblemished, and it glows down upon us.”

A mode of silence is exchanged.

“Hello? I know I’m not talking to myself here, come on. You can tell me all about that mystery man, you’ve been so secretive about. It’ll be just me and you. Come on girl, momma’s here.” Tina laughs. “You’re so crazy, alright just come on over. I’ll be here.”

“Okay see you then.”

They hang up as Tina gets out of the bed.

Randy is walking towards his untidy apartment complex with a disturbed expression. With his straight blonde hair, prescription glasses and close shave, his wardrobe has now taken a skydive. Fashioned with a purple tie-dye shirt and blue jeans with holey knees, his socks are white and his sandals are beige. As he approaches his home, he searches through his pockets and finds his keys. He opens the lobby door and unlocks his mailbox that’s neighbored to other compartments. He looks through his mail, proceeds to walk up a flight of stairs, and then reaches his room.

Three men are passing time with recreation in Randy’s apartment. In casual clothing, Lee is an Asian who hasn’t lost all of his baby fat; let’s just say Lee should consider laying off the Lays potato chips for a bit. Kevin is Jamaican with dreads tied into a man bun. He’s what women would consider to be tall, dark, and handsome. The last in the group is Victor who is a Caucasian like Randy, except he has a pointy chin like the moon guy from those ancient McDonald’s commercials.

Lee screams while holding a football in a bent over position.. “Blue forty-two! Blue forty-two! Greeeeen! Green thirty-eight! Perpendicular pink! Alert, alert! Snail sixty-nine-”

“Oh just hike the damn ball!” Kevin yelled!

Set-” Lee squints his eyes while looking around. “Hike!” Victor runs forward and Kevin the defender performs jumping jacks while shifting from left to right in-front of Victor. Lee throws the pass and Randy closes the apartment door. “Hey come on guys! My place isn’t a rec-center.”

Victor jumps over the couch, catches it, and touches the television. “Touchdown! Yeah, baby!” Victor performs the tootsie-roll and throws the football into Randy’s crystal souvenirs. “Ooou, my bad!” Randy expels a deep breath while nodding negatively. “Whatever.” Randy receives a brotherly hug from Kevin before he sits down on the couch. “What’s with you man? You seem blue.”

“Yeah, it’s the noose tied around my neck. You won’t believe who I saw today?” Randy replied.

“Who?” Kevin asked with curiosity, but then Victor interrupts them. “Well guys godda go, I’ve got an emergency to tend to.”

Lee frowns. “Emergency?”

Victor thrusts his pelvis with each following word. “An emer-gen-cy!” Lee grins sarcastically and waves him off while Victor exits the apartment. Lee creeps beside the couch, sits down, and smiles from cheek to cheek. “So Randy who’s this mystery person?” Kevin sits on the arm of the couch.

Randy wipes his face and sighs. “Tina, I saw her at the cafe I visited.”

“Whoa!” Both of Randy’s friends commented.

Lee stands and rolls his head around. “Tina? The finest woman known to man. The only woman that you’ve ever dated. The only woman that stood by you through thick and thin. The only woman that sacrificed her life for you. The only woman that liked looking at you. The only woman that found you funny. The only woman that loved you at all. The only wo-”

“Alright, ALRIGHT!” Randy exasperated.

“Man, did you talk to her?” Kevin inquired.

“Naw, she seemed upset.”

“At you?” Lee asked a question of his own.

“No, at something else. She left in a hurry.”

Kevin grins and leans back on the couch. “So why did you guys break up anyway? You never told us the real reason.”

“People interfered and, well there were too many complications.”

“Complications? What complications?” Kevin asked.

“Differences.”

With Kevin still the one asking questions, he sits back against the couch and slouches. “Oh yeah Randy, we really understand now.”

“What? What more do you want me to say? I told you everything.”

“As far as I’m concerned you didn’t tell us shit.”

“I couldn’t fulfill her needs alright.”

“Needs? Oh that helps too!”

“Fine, we never had sex! Okay? Is that elaborate enough for you?”

Kevin and Lee chime “Daaaaaamn!”

Lee tries to wrap his head around this whole situation. “And weren’t you two together for like two years? She must have really loved you, but then again she managed to keep you a secret for so lo-”

“Lee!” Kevin interrupted while nodding with disbelief. “Naw man, naw.” Randy sinks deeper into the couch. “Thanks guys, I feel much better now.”

Lee raises his chin and pries deeper into Randy’s feelings. “And I bet you still have her number, don’t you?”

“Well”

“Don’t you?”

“Well-”

“Don’t you!”

“Lee, stop badgering the witness.” Kevin interjected, but Lee was on to something as Randy provides more information. “It‘s her old number.” Then Lee says “Her old number? Man how old fashioned can you be?” Kevin returns to the questioning. “Did you manage to get a good look at her friends?”

“Somewhat.”

“Good, I say we go back there tomorrow and see if they return.”

Lee rolls his eyes. “Great, we’re stalkers now.” Worry is featured on Randy’s face as he expresses concern. “Man, I don’t know. I don’t want to bother her.” Then Kevin presses the issue. “Dude, do you still love this girl?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“And you want her back?”

“Well-”

“He does.” Lee commented.

“Then nothing should stop us.”

“I guess you’re right.”

Kevin pats Randy on his back. “It’s not a matter of guessing, it’s a sure fact. Alright?”

“Alright.” Randy said.
