Once, there was a little candle which stood in a room with other candles. She had intricate designs and beads on her wax skin that were different from every other candle. Other candles were much larger and much more beautiful than she was. Some were ornate and some were rather simple, like herself. Some were white, some were blue, some were pink, some were green. She had no idea why she was there, and the other candles made her feel rather small and insignificant.

One day, a man, who had less than enough in his pocket, bought the little candle, took her home and placed it on his shelf. As the sun set and the sky grew dark, the man lit a flame on a small stick and moved it towards the candle. Thinking he was going to set her on fire, she cried, “No, no! Don’t burn me, please!” But she knew that she could not be heard and prepared herself for the pain that would follow. To her surprise, the room filled with light. She wondered where it came from since the man had extinguished his fire stick. To her delight, she realized that the light came from herself.

That night, the man invited his family over for dinner. The man and his family ate, drank and played games in the dim lit room with the single candle, while it was dark at night outside. The candle felt happy that she could make people happy by allowing them to see. As she was the only light source in the room, she felt special.

Week after week, as the candle helped the man see, her wax began to flow. Yet the candle continued to burn even as her wax reached down below. One night, the man went out and left the candle to burn. He spent the night with friends and had forgotten to return.

Fortunately, a gusty wind blew through the windows and put out the candle’s flame. Grateful, the candle vowed never to let anyone light her again. She let her wick fall inside her, so she could let it out only when she pleased. Meanwhile she let her wax dry in the breeze.

The next evening, the man needed the candle to spark. But the wick was buried in the candle, and he couldn’t see in the dark. He pleaded the candle and said, “Please light up candle, I can’t see. You’re very special, please, one more time and I’ll leave you be.”

The candle thought and thought. Finally, she trusted the man’s words and let her wick out. But the man had left again, and let her burn without a doubt. As the candle became smaller and smaller, her designs and little beads reached the shelf. As she burned to the last bit, she was afraid she would no longer be herself.

I give and give and I let myself burn, she cried softly, I just want to give, for love is what I’ll earn.

Then the wind blew the window open and the candle almost tipped over. Unknowingly her flame passed on to another candle as her fall had brought them closer. Now another candle beside her had shared her light. Both candles were now burning, and suddenly the room was twice as bright.

The candle saw from the large polished mirrors that there was brightness outside all along. She needed to put herself first instead of thinking it was wrong.

The candle thought, I always want to be special but I am nothing special if I died. I have the power to defy and define darkness if I just really really tried.
