Dating : Do People Taking Screenshots of Texts/Apps Scare Anyone?

One of my many fears about dating is that any written messages between me and her could be used against me. Whether on Tinder or regular texting, part of me is really scared that I’ll misspeak or make a mistake with something I say, and the person takes a screenshot and shares it on social media for me to get bashed/cancelled. It’s one of the things that’s stopped me from dating for over a year.

Can anyone relate? I also know that millions of people assume this risk when they go on apps or text romantic partners, so maybe there’s just something I’m not understanding?

EDIT: This obviously doesn’t pertain to sexting, sending derogatory messages, racist/sexist/LGBTQIA+ phobic shit. I’m talking about misunderstandings that can happen through texting, misinterpretations, etc.

  1. Yep the key to not being in trouble is to not do things that would get you in trouble.

Until you upset someone, or they decide they don’t like you, and lie about you. Nothing you can do there accept say “I didn’t do it” and hope folks believe you. And if they don’t, cut them out of your life.

  2. Well firstly I don’t think I’ve ever said anything that I can get « cancelled » for and second screenshots of text doesn’t really have any authenticity behind them as anyone can easily go into something like MS Paint and create text chat bubbles saying whatever. Texts aren’t exactly legally binding hand written and signed documents.

  3. You are overthinking this man. Even if someone did put something on social media it would have to be really really really bad for it to gain any kind of traction otherwise it would get lost in the noise.

People edit shit all the time too. Like, whose to say you don’t even say something bad but someone takes your message and tweaks it in photoshop and claims you said something when you didn’t. Just because you see something is in a screenshot doesn’t even mean it’s real anymore. I see more and more people doing weird things for clicks and likes. They will text themselves from a different phone to craft a fake conversation where they can respond with the perfect zinger and hope it goes viral. There are so many possibilities for someone to craft something you didn’t say as opposed to something you did that I wouldn’t worry about it at all honestly.

  4. What are you texting about that you’re afraid of that?

Yes everything you write stays forever, but if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about

  5. There was that ByeFelipe IG – and I assume there’s a lot more like that. General rules is just to be kind, polite, and review your message before sending it.

  6. I don’t have fears of being « cancelled » or anything like that. The only time this comes to mind is when the girl talks about her friends, and makes comments about her friend’s partners. You know the girls all talk to each other about their relationships, and you know things shared just between you two are getting thrown in those group chats. It is what it is, I just keep true to myself and if they wanna roast me for it whatever. If I am happy, and my partner is genuinely happy, they can say whatever they want.

  7. People can save texts, Twitter messages, Snap Chat messages, phone calls, etc. Always assume that whatever you say over the phone or computer can be saved. That is the way things are now and the way they have been.

If you don’t want it saved, don’t say it.
