Dating : Catfish attempts to con my money

Dating : Catfish attempts to con my money

Background: I met this chill gal over Okc. We chatted on the app but quickly moved to Hangout (as she deleted her Okc profile, too many creepy guys approached her). I asked for her numbers but she had bad encounter before and would like to get to know me via chat first. I pushed for a date but she wasn’t ready.

A week went by, we chatted daily. By the end of the week, I’m ready to call it quit, then she suggested we meet in a week time. However, 2 days later, she had an emergency and had to fly home as her mother collapsed. I pushed to get number to talk to her. There were a numbers of red flags and I was ready to confront her.

And this is our final chat where she attempted to ask for money.

Enjoy and do not fall prey to catfish!

But I need to get some medication for her, She’s always tired which is one of the reasons she passed out, and I am kind of tapped out, I didn’t bring enough with me. And I need to get the meds today. She’s always tired without the meds, I’d be glad if you can loan me some funds, I’ll pay back when I’m back home on Friday.

I could, but you’re asking this because I asked you for help. If you had asked for it any other day, I’d have done it but I totally understand where you’re coming from. Thanks

  1. Misty (AKMED or INDIAN NAME) playing the long game. You have to assume most any woman interested, that doesn’t do phone # if fake. I got one to try and close the deal a lot quicker. I told them I had to borrow the money and my friend wanted them to write a poem using the word true. That was fun. Another, I asked to send me a picture of his mouth kissing a monkey’s ass.

  2. Red flag #1: they ask to move to a different app like hangouts.

I’ve run into this shit enough that I begin with a disclaimer: “Never, will I ever, under any circumstances EVER send you ANY money in any way, shape or form. If you’re trying to make money it is best you move on to an easier target and save us both a lot time and energy.”

Then ask open-ended questions and see if they tend to keep short, neutral answers.

Ask them for a selfie doing something unique like giving an “ok” sign.

If it seems too good to be true, it’s a scam (e.g.; she’s particularly hotter than you usually get irl).

Improper grammar is another red flag.

  3. I had a case of a scammer (someone I met on an online dating site) who needed money for an emergency. I didn’t reveal that I knew she/he was scamming, though. I played along and extended the entire money conversation for over 2 weeks, because I said, I could send the money, but it will be by snail mail overnight, since I didn’t know how to use the money transfer service that she recommended. Of course, the first 1 or 2 days, i couldn’t get it to the mail, and by then it was Friday, so I didn’t know if she would get it on the weekend. By the early part of the next week, I could claim it should have arrived and I don’t know what’s going on, I’ll check with the mail service, etc etc

All in all, it was 2 weeks of back and forth, including another attempt to send a 2nd mail with more money, until she finally accused me of scamming her by not sending her any money but saying that I would. Oh well.

I’m glad you didn’t fall for the story. It’s a wonder why so many people do, though…I haven’t quite wrapped my head around how easily scammers get money from strangers, just by creating a sob story.
