Dating : AITA for not staying friends

Dating : AITA for not staying friends

Dated this guy for about a month (im gay) everything seemed to be going ok. I had been diagnosed with HSV1 from a hookup about a year before and it really complicated my approach to dating. I waited 3 dates to tell him, and tried to make sure he was actually worth disclosing too by asking if he just saw me as a friend first, he didn’t say I was just a friend, just that he really enjoyed spending time with me and wants to keep doing so. I took that as he was still feeling “us” out and hadn’t made a decision. So I said fuck it, and I told him. All he had to say back was “ok”, that’s where the conversation ended. I never had the courage to kiss him because I wasn’t convinced that he was actually ok with my condition from the way he responded, so we never did. He pretty much evaporated into thin air after that. Two weeks of one sided conversations that only I would start and he kept giving one-two word answers. Eventually I just asked him if something was up because it was very obvious he was avoiding me. He said he was nervous because he didn’t see anything romantic with me, but really wanted to stay friends. He said it was shitty of him to lead me on. That really hurt.
So I felt like 1 of 2 things (or both happened): he either was never into me from the start, or he was grossed out by my disclosure, or both. All in all, I felt incredibly overexposed to him, and it seemed like he could’ve just been honest about how he felt and it all would’ve been avoided.
I try to imagine what it would feel like to be at a guys apartment who you’re too nervous to reject and have him disclose HSV to you, probably shear terror that he might come on to you. That image was the reason I couldn’t be friends with him. Knowing how he might’ve actually felt around me then, in contrast to how I felt about him is extremely mortifying. AITA for cutting him out of my life?

  1. Umm… I don’t know man HSV1 is not a big deal (like 80% of adults in North America and 50% worldwide have it and it barely has any symptoms). Feels like he wasn’t into you from the very beginning. I don’t see why you would be an asshole for not staying friends. This all just sounds like a « thing » that didn’t work out. Don’t sweat it and move on.
