Dating : I have a question about starting a conversation with a girl, online.

So here’s the situation. There’s a girl that I know only because my friend knew her in high school. We went to the same school but she was a year younger so we never crossed paths. Back to the present, I recently added this girl on facebook, she popped up under the « people you may know » section one day. So after we became friends on facebook I noticed she was really cute, and I decided I want to try to talk to her. I’m hesitant because I’ve never tried to start a conversation online with someone I’ve never met, I’ve only ever done it in person. I’ve thought about it some but not sure exactly what to say to avoid sounding creepy or offensive. I’d like some advice please, preferably from girls, on how I should start the conversation and make it clear I’m interested in this girl, without her thinking I’m a jackass. Thanks!

  1. I always love when people start conversation by saying something unique they noticed about me that they relate to. Tell me “Hey, I saw your Totoro keychain! Are you a Miyazaki film fan too?” rather than “I like your dress.” The former is engaging and shows me someone is interested in me as a person. The latter is like oh thanks. And that’s it. Superficial conversation isn’t my thing. Show that you want to talk to me because I’m me, not because I’m pretty. And contribute to a conversation. I’m someone who loves to chat and I make an effort to ask questions and be engaging. Don’t answer my questions and I’ll wonder if you’re even reading what I have to say.
